Since 2006, Rutgers is 4-4 against FBS out-of-conference opponents on week one of the college football season. The Scarlet Knights have won those four games by a total score of 124-69 or 13.7 points per game. The Scarlet Knights have lost those four games by a total score of 21.2 points per game.

 
Rutgers won 2 games in 2016 to Howard (FCS) and New Mexico. Rutgers defeated Howard by a score of 52-14 and came from behind to beat New Mexico 37-28. Against the Lobos, the Scarlet Knights trailed 21-0 in the first half but rallied to get the win at home.

 

 
Rutgers lost 10 games in 2016 to FBS opponents (Washington, Iowa, Ohio State, Michigan, Illinois, Minnesota, Indiana, Michigan State, Penn State and Maryland) with a combined overall record of 79-51 or .607%.
