Interview With Former Alabama DB Jeremiah Castille

Jeremiah Castille was a standout defensive back for the Alabama Crimson Tide from 1979-1982. Castille had 16 interceptions for the Crimson Tide (school record) and was named an All-American in his senior season (1982). In Paul "Bear" Bryant's last game as head coach (1982 Liberty Bowl), Castille was named the Liberty Bowl MVP in leading the Crimson Tide from a come-from-behind victory over Illinois 21-15. Alabama had seven interceptions in the game, with Castille picking off three passes in the victory.

Castille was drafted in the 3rd round of the 1983 NFL Draft by Tampa Bay and played with the team from 1983-1986. In 1987, Castille headed to Denver and is best known for recovering the "Byner Fumble" in the 1987 AFC Championship game. Castille's recovery sealed the victory in leading the Broncos to Super Bowl XXII (vs. Washington). Castille finished his pro career with 14 career interceptions.

Currently, Castille is the chaplain for the Alabama Crimson Tide football team and is involved with his foundation called: The Jeremiah Castille Foundation.

The Jeremiah Castille Foundation focuses on mentoring.  Growing up in a dysfunctional home filled with abuse, domestic violence and alcoholism, mentors were the direct result of Jeremiah Castille’s successes in life.  Most notably, the legendary Coach Paul “Bear” Bryant instilled discipline and leadership into Jeremiah’s life.  Coach Bryant taught him that with a positive attitude, a strong work ethic and integrity; he could do great things.  Coach Bryant’s guidance and Jeremiah’s resolve led Jeremiah to numerous successes including, being selected the MVP in Coach Bryant’s last Liberty Bowl game.

His experiences led him to mentor, coach and encourage at-risk youth.  In 1999, he and his wife Jean founded Jeremiah Castille Foundation, a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization. The foundation’s mission based on Isaiah 61:1-4 is to preach good tidings to the poor, heal the broken hearted, proclaim liberty to the captives, open prison doors to those who are bound and glorify the Lord through preaching. The foundation’s vision is to invest, influence, impact and inspire lives so they will rebuild and restore generations. “Hope Revealed” to the hopeless is the focus of the programs of Jeremiah Castille Foundation.
